SENIOR
EMPLOYMENT
The
Alliance on Aging has two programs that offer Monterey
County's older adults an opportunity to enter -
or reenter the workforce.
The first program, Senior Employment, provides low-income
individuals over the age of 55 an opportunity to
work in public or nonprofit agencies and at the
same time receive the training or retraining they
will need to find permanent employment. Senior Aides
are paid minimum wage for 20 hours weekly.
In exchange, the community agencies that employ
them are required to provide trainees withthe on-the-job
training they will need to enter the private workforce.
The
Alliance on Aging also maintains Employment Specialists
on the Monterey Peninsula and in Salinas who provide
placement services for men and women over the
age of 50. Employment Specialists link seniors
seeking full or part-time employment in the private
sector with employers who are in need of such
assistance. This service is provided free-of-charge
to both employers and job seekers.

The
mission of the Senior Employment Program is to enable
older adults to achieve gainful employment and
personal development through their participation
in community service and training. Enrollees are
prepared for today's workforce by building the
skills and confidence that will lead to permanent
employment.
"0ur
participants are conscientious workers. They have
a strong work ethic. They show up on time every
day. They also seem to display a greater degree
of loyalty to their jobs. As a manager, those
are qualities I value in an employee. " says the Program Manager.
According to one participant, "The
Senior AIDES Program paid for my course of computer
fundamentals, something I could never afford on
my own. I learned so much from the course and
my assignment that I've been
hired as a clerk at my local library. "

WHAT
WE PROVIDE
The
Senior Employment Program is funded by the Older Americans'
Act through grants from the U.S. Department of
Labor. Funding within the Program
covers the older workers' wages, benefits, and
supportive services while they are placed at local
community agencies.
Training
is a critical component.
In exchange for the service of enrollees, community
agencies provide a supportive environment, supervision,
and the use of new workplace technology.

THE
PEOPLE WE SERVE

The
older man or woman working in the Senior Employment
Program typically existed on Social Security alone,
prior to enrollment. About 75% of the applicants
to the program are women in their 60s and 70s
- often widowed or divorced - who must rejoin
the work force out of financial need. Some have
never worked and start with few, if any, marketable
skills. Most feel that there is little chance
for employment due to age discrimination and/or
lack of job skills and experience.
